In our fast-paced world full of technology, smartphones, social media, gaming and so on, sometimes you just need to take a time out from all of that and read a good book. September 6 is National Read a Book Day and is the perfect opportunity to switch off the digital world and turn the paper pages of a printed book for a while. Whether you’re a sci-fi fanatic, a non-fiction buff, or a not-so-often reader, there is a book out there just for you.

The Power Saver Club knows that reading is important. It improves language comprehension, critical thinking, and communication skills. Since 1995, First Citizens has been donating books to area schools, libraries, and medical institutions for children to read. A few new books revolving around a theme are chosen each fall, with reading levels from preschool to grade school.

In 2017, the theme was adversity. It is important for children to know that it's okay to be different!

Books donated were:

  • I'm Like You, You're Like Me: A Book About Understanding & Appreciating Each Other
     By Cindy Gainer
  • Bubblegum Brain
    By Julia Cook
  • Fish In A Tree
    By Lynda Mullaly Hunt
