The last few weeks a day hasn't gone by that we aren't receiving messages about new technologies for communicating, sharing, posting, tagging, pinning, etc... New ways of interacting are rapidly becoming commonplace and applications like Zoom and GoToMeeting are keeping us connected while physically apart. Over a year ago First Citizens Bank began discussions with DocuSign to enable electronic signing both for internal use and to serve our external customers better. At that time, we planned to begin by implementing in Wealth Management and slowly move to other areas of the Bank.
As an attorney and banker, I love paper. In fact, both the banking and legal world traditionally have a long-lasting affinity towards paper. It is real, we can touch it and feel it and know how the Courts will resolve issues with it. The unknown has left us slower to embrace the digital world as we resolve the implications and potential pitfalls. Anyone who has purchased a home or executed an estate plan, has experienced literally dozens and dozens of pages that require a physical signature. All good things must come to an end and it seems the world of paper is slowly fading. The last few weeks have forced us to embrace DocuSign at a rapid pace to avoid requiring customers to come into the bank at a time when staying home is not only convenient but recommended to keep everyone safe.
Fortunately, in February, First Citizens Bank completed due diligence and executed an agreement with DocuSign to begin rolling out eSignature. DocuSign is the leader in Digital Transaction Management. Electronic signatures are valid and legally binding in many of the transactions we utilize on a daily basis. In late March, we implemented DocuSign in Lending and Retail to support the efficient delivery of Payment Protection Program loans and deposit account opening, in Wealth Management to allow digital account opening and Operations to allow for a variety of customer maintenance type items. By incorporating the eSignature process into our world, we can offer a faster, better experience while at the same time reducing costs and improving security and compliance and most importantly now, keeping our customers safe at home. We continue to explore new use cases for DocuSign and look forward to implementing in new areas, such as the Home Loan Center. Be patient with us while we figure out the legalities for each type of product and service we offer and thank you for embracing this new technology with us.
